EWC Insights: Deterring the United States - China and Multidomain Strategic Stability
While China and the United States remain at political odds, there are indications that China’s strategies in space, cyber, and nuclear spheres are increasingly intersecting with those of the United States and Russia, with a pronounced impact on strategic stability. China has recently displayed a wide range of military capabilities, including evidence of its expanded intercontinental ballistic missile silos and its test of a hypersonic glide vehicle coupled with a fractional orbital bombardment system. A key question is whether China becoming more like the United States and Russia is a stabilizing or destabilizing phenomenon. To answer this question, Dr. Saalman will explore the current state of Chinese multidomain deterrence through the lens of strategic stability, active defense, and proactive defense. She will discuss how these concepts translate into posture and technology and what these signify for potential U.S.-China strategic stability dialogues and even future talks that include Russia.
